GCSE Resits and the November Series
The autumn GCSE series covers English Language and Mathematics only. The November 2026 papers run from Tuesday, 3 November 2026 to Monday, 9 November 2026, with results on Thursday, 14 January 2027. Every other GCSE subject is a summer entry.
Only two subjects run in November
The autumn series exists for GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics. If you need to resit a science, a language, History, Geography or anything else, the next opportunity is the summer series — Monday, 10 May 2027 to Friday, 18 June 2027 in 2027. Planning around that gap is the whole game.

Every paper is a morning session starting at 09:00. These are AQA's dates — Edexcel, OCR and WJEC run the autumn series for the same two subjects, in common slots agreed under JCQ. Confirm against the board you are entered with.

November or wait for the summer?
For English Language and Maths you have a genuine choice, and it usually comes down to how much preparation time you actually need. November gives you a result in January — useful if a college place or an apprenticeship depends on it. The summer gives you six more months to prepare.

GCSE resits, answered
Which GCSEs can you resit in November?
GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics only. Every other GCSE subject is examined in the summer series alone, so a resit in History, a science or a language means waiting until the following May or June.
When are the November 2026 GCSE resits?
The November 2026 exams run from Tuesday, 3 November 2026 to Monday, 9 November 2026. Every paper is a morning session starting at 09:00.
When do GCSE resit results come out?
Results for the November 2026 series are released to students on Thursday, 14 January 2027 from 08:00, with centres receiving them the previous day. That is roughly ten weeks after the exams — considerably longer than the wait after a summer series.
When is the entry deadline for a November resit?
AQA's closing date for the November 2026 series is Sunday, 4 October 2026, after which a late entry fee applies. Exam centres set their own earlier deadline so entries can be processed and checked, so register well before the awarding body's date rather than on it.
Can you resit a GCSE if you have left school?
Yes. Anyone can enter as a private candidate at any age, with no requirement to be studying anywhere. You pay the entry fee yourself — £215 for most GCSE subjects — and sit the same papers as school candidates.
Does your original GCSE grade get cancelled?
No. Both results stay on your record and you use the better one, so a resit cannot lower the grade you already hold. There is no downside risk to the attempt itself beyond the fee and the preparation time.
Can you resit a single GCSE paper?
No. GCSEs are linear, so you re-enter for the whole subject and sit every paper again in the same series. Marks from papers you did well in cannot be carried forward.
Do you have to resit GCSE English and Maths?
If you are aged 16 to 18 and in publicly funded education without a grade 4 in English or Maths, the condition of funding requires you to keep studying them — and your school or college makes the entry. Outside that, resitting is a choice, and you enter privately.
Is the November series easier than the summer one?
No. The papers, the specification and the grading standard are identical. The difference is practical: fewer subjects are available, the cohort is smaller, and results take longer to arrive.
