How private candidates receive results

Awarding bodies release results to centres, not to candidates. Whoever entered you is who you get them from, which for a private candidate means us rather than a school you no longer attend. You do not need to travel anywhere on the day.

What you receive first is a statement of results. The certificate itself is issued by the awarding body later and is the permanent record — the statement is not. Keep the certificate somewhere safe, because replacing it years later is slower and dearer than people expect.

If a grade looks wrong, act on the day

Post-results deadlines are short and are not extended. The priority review for candidates holding a university place closes earliest of all, so a week's delay can remove the only option that would have saved the place. Contact us on results day itself, not once the dust has settled.

Reviews of marking, and when they are worth it

Three services exist, and they answer different questions.

Clerical re-check

Confirms marks were added correctly and no page went unmarked.

Review of marking

A senior examiner checks the mark scheme was applied correctly.

Access to script

See your marked paper, to decide whether a review is worth requesting.

Fees are set by the awarding body and refunded in full if the grade changes. A review can move a mark down as well as up, though most result in no change. The honest test: if the paper went far worse than every mock and past paper predicted, request one. If the grade matches your recent work, it is unlikely to move.

If the grade is not what you needed

A disappointing result is not the end of the route, but the options have different clocks. Clearing runs from A-Level results day into the autumn. A review of marking closes within weeks. A resit entry is months away but decided early.

GCSE English Language and Maths run again in November, so a result in those two can be improved within a few months. Every other subject, and every A-Level, returns in the following summer series.

Results day, answered

When is A-Level results day 2027?

Thursday 12 August 2027. Results are released to students from 08:00, with centres receiving them from 00:01 the previous day. GCSE results follow a week later.

When is GCSE results day 2027?

Thursday 19 August 2027, released to students from 08:00. Centres receive them from 00:01 on 18 August.

How do private candidates get their results?

Through the centre that entered you, not from the awarding body directly. We release results to candidates on the published day from 08:00 — by the method agreed when you registered. You do not need to attend in person.

When do November GCSE resit results come out?

14 January 2027 for the November 2026 series, released to students from 08:00. That is roughly ten weeks after the exams, a longer wait than after a summer series.

What if my result is lower than expected?

Act on results day itself, not the following week. You can ask for a clerical re-check, a review of marking by a senior examiner, or a copy of your marked script to decide whether a review is worth requesting. A priority review exists for candidates whose university place depends on the outcome, and it closes earliest of all.

Can a review of marking lower my grade?

Yes, in principle. A review can move a mark down as well as up, though in practice most result in no change. The fee is refunded in full if the grade changes. If a paper went far worse than every mock and past paper suggested, a review is worth the fee; if the result matches your recent work, it usually is not.

When do I receive my certificate?

Certificates are issued by the awarding body some months after results and reach you through the centre that entered you. They are the permanent record — the results slip is not. Keep them somewhere safe, because replacing one later is slower and costs more than most people expect.

Do my results show that I was a private candidate?

No. The certificate carries the qualification, the grade and the awarding body, with nothing about how the entry was made or where you studied. Universities and employers cannot distinguish it from a school candidate's.

Can I resit if the grade is not what I needed?

Yes. GCSE English Language and Maths run again in November; everything else, including all A-Levels, returns in the following summer series. Your original grade stays on record and the better of the two is the one you use.

Planning a resit after results?
