STEP Mathematics
Demonstrate Your Mathematical Excellence
Qualification & Service Overview
The Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP) is a well-established mathematics examination used by the University of Cambridge, the University of Warwick, and other leading institutions to assess applicants' aptitude for undergraduate mathematics courses.
We provide the rigorous, specialized environment required for these challenging papers. We ensure strict adherence to all examination conditions, allowing candidates to focus deeply on solving complex mathematical problems.
As a fully registered centre for Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing, we handle the entire registration and administration process, giving candidates the peace of mind to concentrate on their rigorous preparation.
What STEP is and who needs it
STEP — the Sixth Term Examination Paper — is a mathematics admissions examination used by a small number of universities, most prominently Cambridge and Warwick, as a condition of a mathematics offer. It is sat in the summer alongside A-Levels and the result forms part of the offer rather than a separate qualification.
Whether you need it, and which papers, is set by the university making the offer. Check your offer conditions rather than assuming, because requirements differ between institutions and between courses.
Preparing for a paper unlike A-Level Maths
STEP does not test more content than A-Level; it tests the same content much harder. Questions are long, lightly scaffolded, and reward a candidate who can sustain a single argument for half an hour rather than one who can answer many short prompts quickly.
The consequence for preparation is that speed drills do not help. Working a small number of past questions to completion, without hints, is worth more than covering many superficially.
STEP Mathematics — your questions answered
Do I need STEP for a maths degree?
Only if the offer requires it. Cambridge and Warwick are the best-known universities to do so for mathematics. Read your offer conditions rather than assuming, because requirements vary by university and by course.
Can I sit STEP as a private candidate?
Yes, through a centre that registers external candidates for it. Registration windows close well before the papers, so this is a booking to make early.
When is STEP sat?
In the summer, in the same period as A-Level examinations. Results are issued in August alongside A-Level results, in time for offer confirmation.
