The last scheduled GCSE paper is Friday, 18 June 2027, but the awarding bodies designate Wednesday, 23 June 2027 as the contingency day for the whole series. If national disruption forces a paper to be rescheduled, it moves to that day — and candidates are expected to be available for it. When do GCSE exams start in 2027?

GCSE exams begin on Monday, 10 May 2027. Exams run in two sessions a day — mornings start at 09:00 and afternoons at 13:30 — and nothing is timetabled outside those two start times.

When is the last GCSE exam in 2027?

The last scheduled GCSE exam is on Friday, 18 June 2027. That is not the date you can stop being available, though: the awarding bodies have designated Wednesday, 23 June 2027 as the contingency day for the series.

What is the GCSE contingency day?

Wednesday, 23 June 2027 is set aside in case an awarding body has to reschedule a paper after national disruption. No exams are timetabled on it, but every candidate must remain available until the end of that day. Booking travel before it is the most common planning mistake families make.

Are there GCSE exams during half term?

No. There are no exams scheduled between Monday, 31 May 2027 and Friday, 4 June 2027. Exams resume the following week and continue into June.

Do all exam boards use the same GCSE dates?

Largely, yes. GCSE exams are timetabled in common slots agreed by all exam boards under the Joint Council for Qualifications, so the same subject usually sits on the same day whether you are entered with AQA, Edexcel, OCR or WJEC. Component-level details can still differ, so confirm against the board you are actually entered with.

What time do GCSE exams start?

Every GCSE exam starts at either 09:00 or 13:30. A centre may start up to 30 minutes earlier or later than the published time without notifying the board, so arrive on the centre's instructions rather than the published time.

What happens if two exams are in the same session?

You sit them one after the other in the same session, with a supervised break between them at the centre's discretion. Clashes are normal in a linear system and are handled by the centre — you do not need to arrange anything yourself.

When are GCSE coursework and NEA deadlines in 2027?

Non-exam assessment marks must reach the awarding body by set dates, the earliest being Friday, 7 May 2027. Private candidates should treat these as much harder deadlines than the exams themselves, because work cannot be submitted late.
