What are Functional Skills, and who needs them?
Functional Skills are Ofqual-regulated qualifications in English and Maths that assess whether you can apply those skills to real situations — reading a workplace document, interpreting data, calculating a cost — rather than reproducing academic content. They exist at Entry Level and at Levels 1 and 2.
Level 2 is the one most people need. It is accepted as the GCSE grade 4 equivalent for the purposes of apprenticeships, most nursing and teaching access routes, and a wide range of employers and college courses. Level 1 sits below it and is often taken as a stepping stone.
The typical candidate is an adult who left school without a grade 4 in English or Maths and now needs one for an apprenticeship, a job or a course. Functional Skills is usually a faster and cheaper route to that requirement than a full GCSE resit.
Functional Skills or a GCSE resit?
Take Functional Skills Level 2 when what you need is the equivalence — an apprenticeship, an employer, or a course that accepts it. Assessment is shorter, exams run far more frequently than the GCSE calendar allows, and results come back quickly, so a requirement can be met in weeks rather than waiting for a summer or November series.
Take the GCSE instead when something specifically requires a GCSE grade 4. Some sixth forms, some universities and some professional routes ask for the GCSE itself and will not accept the equivalent. Check the exact wording of the requirement before choosing, because the two are not interchangeable everywhere.
How the exams work
Maths is assessed in a non-calculator section and a calculator section. English is assessed in three components: reading, writing, and speaking, listening and communicating, which is conducted separately from the written papers.
Unlike GCSE, Functional Skills is not tied to a fixed national series. Assessments are available at frequent intervals through the year, which is what makes it the practical choice when a deadline is close.
Functional Skills Qualifications — your questions answered
Is Functional Skills Level 2 the same as a GCSE?
It is accepted as equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 in English or Maths for apprenticeships and by many employers and colleges, but it is a different qualification. Where a requirement names the GCSE specifically, the equivalent will not always be accepted — check the wording rather than assuming.
What is Functional Skills Maths?
An Ofqual-regulated qualification that assesses applied numeracy: calculating costs, interpreting charts, working with measurements and solving practical problems. It is assessed in a non-calculator section and a calculator section, at Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2.
How quickly can I get a Functional Skills qualification?
Far faster than a GCSE. Assessments run frequently rather than in fixed annual series, and results are returned quickly, so a Level 2 requirement can often be met in a matter of weeks once you are ready to sit.
Do I need Level 1 before Level 2?
No. You can enter directly at Level 2 if you are ready for it. Level 1 exists as a stepping stone for candidates who are not, and it is a recognised qualification in its own right.
Do apprenticeships accept Functional Skills?
Yes. Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths is the standard route for apprentices who do not hold a GCSE grade 4, and it is the reason most of our Functional Skills candidates sit the exam.
Is there a speaking assessment in Functional Skills English?
Yes. English is assessed across reading, writing, and speaking, listening and communicating. The speaking component is conducted separately from the written papers and has to be arranged with the centre.
