AS-Level Examinations
Build a Strong Foundation for Your A-Level Success
Qualification & Service Overview
AS-Levels serve as an excellent stepping stone towards full A-Level qualifications or as standalone achievements to bolster your academic portfolio. Our partner centres are fully equipped to host private candidates for all AS-Level subjects.
We cater to home-schooled individuals, mature students, and those looking to improve their academic standing. Our booking system is designed to be straightforward, giving you immediate confirmation of your exam entry.
Your exam is held at a centre we have vetted for calm conditions and experienced invigilation, so the sitting itself is rigorous and fair. Everything around it — entry, deadlines, timetable and results — is managed by our examinations team.
What an AS-Level is now
Since the 2015 reforms, AS-Level is a standalone qualification. Its marks do not count towards the A-Level in the same subject, and sitting one does not shorten or contribute to the full A-Level you take later. That single change catches out most people who remember the old system, where AS was the first half of the A-Level.
What an AS still does is produce a graded qualification in a year, worth UCAS points in its own right. An A grade at AS carries 20 tariff points, which is 40% of an A-Level at the same grade.
When an AS-Level is worth taking
It is worth taking when you want a fourth subject on record without committing two years to it, when you want evidence of achievement in a subject before applying, or when you need a qualification in a specific area for a course requirement that an AS satisfies.
It is not worth taking as a stepping stone to the A-Level, because it does not feed into it. If the A-Level is the goal, enter for the A-Level.
AS-Level Examinations — your questions answered
Does an AS-Level count towards the A-Level?
No. AS-Level has been a standalone qualification since 2015, and its marks do not contribute to the A-Level grade in the same subject. Retaking an AS will not improve an A-Level result.
How many UCAS points is an AS-Level worth?
An A grade at AS-Level is worth 20 UCAS tariff points, which is 40% of the 48 points an A grade at A-Level carries. Lower grades scale down proportionally.
Can I sit an AS-Level as a private candidate?
Yes, on the same basis as an A-Level. AS papers are examined in the summer series alongside A-Levels, and we enter and seat private candidates for them.
Is there an autumn AS-Level series?
No. Like A-Levels, AS-Levels are examined in the summer only. The autumn series covers GCSE English Language and Maths.
