Can you take GCSE Mathematics as a private candidate?

GCSE Mathematics is assessed entirely by written examination. There is no coursework and no non-exam assessment, which makes it one of the most straightforward subjects to sit as a private candidate.

Most candidates we register for GCSE Maths are either retaking to reach a grade 4 or 5 for a college place, employer or university requirement, or are home-educated students sitting it for the first time. Both routes work the same way.

Mathematics questions from private candidates

Do I need to choose Foundation or Higher tier?

+

Yes, and you choose at the point of entry. Foundation tier covers grades 1 to 5, and Higher tier covers grades 4 to 9. If you only need a grade 4 or 5, Foundation is usually the safer choice because the questions are more accessible.

Can I sit GCSE Maths without doing any coursework?

+

Yes. GCSE Mathematics has no coursework and no non-exam assessment. Your grade comes entirely from the written papers you sit in the exam room, which is why it is one of the easiest subjects to take as a private candidate.

Can I use a calculator?

+

On some papers only. GCSE Mathematics includes both non-calculator and calculator papers, so you will need a scientific calculator for part of the assessment. Bring it with the memory cleared, as required by JCQ rules.
