GCSE Biology for Private Candidates
GCSE Biology is available to private candidates, but it is not as simple as a written-only subject. There is no coursework to hand in, yet the specification includes required practical activities that are examined in the written papers, so the centre you sit at has to be one that supports private candidates for science.

Can you take GCSE Biology as a private candidate?
GCSE Biology has no coursework to submit, but the specification includes required practical activities, and questions about those practicals appear in the written papers. A centre must be willing to accommodate this before it accepts a private candidate entry.
Home-educated students and candidates retaking science to meet a college, apprenticeship or healthcare course requirement. Because of the practical element, entries need to be arranged earlier than for a written-only subject.

How is GCSE Biology assessed?
GCSE Biology (8461) is assessed by 2 written papers, with no coursework to submit. You sit all of them in the same exam series, at the same tier.
| Paper | Length | Marks | Weighting | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 1h 45m | 100 | 50% | Topics 1–4: cell biology, organisation, infection and response, bioenergetics |
| Paper 2 | 1h 45m | 100 | 50% | Topics 5–7: homeostasis and response, inheritance, ecology |
What do the required practicals mean for a private candidate?
10
required practical activities
15%+
of total marks draw on them
Nothing is submitted for marking, but questions drawing on those ten practicals are worth at least 15% of the whole qualification. A candidate who has never carried them out is effectively giving away a substantial share of the marks before the paper starts.

Biology questions from private candidates
Can I take GCSE Biology as a private candidate?
+
Yes. AQA confirms GCSE Biology is open to private candidates. There is no coursework to submit, but the specification includes required practical activities, and a centre must be willing to accommodate private candidates for science before it can accept your entry.
Do I have to complete the required practicals?
+
You will not submit practical work for marking, but questions about the required practical activities appear in the written papers. Candidates who have never carried them out are at a clear disadvantage, so it is worth arranging practical exposure before you sit.
Is Biology harder to arrange than Maths or English?
+
Usually yes. Written-only subjects can be entered right up to the deadline, whereas science entries depend on finding a centre that supports private candidates for practical subjects. Start the process earlier for Biology than you would for Maths.
