IGCSE and GCSE are the same level of qualification, assessed in different ways. Both sit at Level 2 on the UK framework and both are accepted by sixth forms, colleges, universities and employers as equivalent. The difference is not how hard they are but how they are examined — coursework, exam sessions, boards and grading — and for a private candidate, that is what actually decides which to take.
What is the difference between IGCSE and GCSE?
In one line: GCSE is the qualification designed for schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; IGCSE (International GCSE) is the version designed to be sat anywhere in the world. Because it has to work in countries without UK-style schools, most IGCSE subjects are assessed entirely by written exams, with little or no coursework. That single design choice drives almost every practical difference below.
Who awards them?
- GCSE — AQA, Edexcel (Pearson), OCR and Eduqas (WJEC), regulated by Ofqual in England.
- IGCSE — Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel International. Edexcel International GCSEs are graded 9–1; Cambridge IGCSEs are offered graded 9–1 or A*–G depending on the syllabus and where it is sat.
Assessment: the difference that matters
| Feature | GCSE | IGCSE |
|---|---|---|
| Coursework / NEA | Present in some subjects (Art, DT, languages' speaking, English Language spoken endorsement) | Mostly exam-only; a few subjects offer an optional coursework route |
| Exam sessions | Summer; English Language and Maths also in November | Summer and, for many subjects, a November or January session too |
| Practical science | Assessed through the written papers | Assessed through the written papers (an alternative-to-practical paper on some Cambridge syllabuses) |
| Tiers | Foundation / Higher in tiered subjects | Core / Extended (Cambridge) or Foundation / Higher (Edexcel) in tiered subjects |
| Centres taking private candidates | Very wide | Wide, but check the specific syllabus |
Is IGCSE easier than GCSE?
No. Three things get mixed up:
- Fewer components (no coursework) feels simpler — but the exams then carry 100% of the marks.
- IGCSE content can be broader and less UK-specific. That is a difference in what is covered, not the standard.
- A Core or Foundation paper looks gentler than a Higher paper — but the grades available on it are capped, exactly as on GCSE Foundation tier.
Grade boundaries on both are set so that a 7, 8 or 9 means the same standard of work.
IGCSE or GCSE: which should a private candidate choose?
Ask which assessment you can actually complete from outside a school:
- Choose IGCSE when the GCSE version has a component that is hard to arrange privately — a speaking test, an art portfolio, an English Language spoken endorsement. This is why home educators lean towards IGCSE English and IGCSE languages.
- Choose GCSE when you are resitting a subject you already studied, want the widest choice of centres, or are using resources and tutors built around the GCSE specification. See our GCSE entry page.
- Mix them. Nothing stops you sitting IGCSE English with GCSE Maths and GCSE sciences. Colleges do not mind.
Is IGCSE recognised in the UK?
Yes. UK universities, colleges and employers treat IGCSE and GCSE as equivalent. The one place IGCSEs are not counted is in state school performance tables in England — a rule about how schools are measured, with no bearing on a private candidate's certificate or applications.
Cost and timing
Entry fees are similar and vary more by subject than by qualification. Entry deadlines differ by board and session, so check exam entry deadlines before deciding, and our fees page for per-subject prices. Our IGCSE page lists the subjects we can arrange.
Frequently asked questions
Is IGCSE the same as GCSE?
They are equivalent qualifications at the same level, but not identical: IGCSE is the international version, usually exam-only, awarded by Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel International.
Do universities prefer GCSE or IGCSE?
Neither. Both meet GCSE-level entry requirements.
Is IGCSE Maths easier than GCSE Maths?
No. The content is closely matched and the top grades are set to the same standard. Some candidates find the paper style suits them better, which is a different thing.
Can I take IGCSEs in the UK as a private candidate?
Yes, at centres approved by Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel International that accept external candidates. We arrange entries at approved centres in London.
Do IGCSEs have a spoken English requirement?
Not in the way GCSE English Language does. This is the most common reason private candidates choose IGCSE English.
